One of the techniques that are taught in WLCI Fashion School is the surface ornamentation technique. This is an age-old technique used profusely by all designers. Surface ornamentation not only adds to the aesthetics of the fabric/clothing but also increases its value by appearance and price.

There are various avenues of surface ornamentation like-

  • Embroidery: India has a rich heritage of embroidery and handiwork. Different areas have different specialized form of stitching like ‘Zardosi’ stitch, ‘Kantha’ stitch, ‘Kashmiri’ stitch, so on and so forth. Embroideries are used to display ones rich culture and heritage in a fabric and make it unique.
  • Painting: Nothing can be more appealing than wearing a piece of ‘Art’ on you! Painting is a form of surface ornamentation that multiplies the garments aesthetic value by leaps and bounds.
  • Printing: This form of surface ornamentation is the most common one and gives the fabric/garment an uplifting appearance.
  • Embellishments: Nowadays, many forms of embellishment are being used to make the garment, exotic as well as eye-catching.
Elements like shells, coins, beads, mirrors, sequins, knots and various other properties are being used to embellish the clothing and create a fashion statement.

Review of WLCI on Kidchella

wlci feedbackKim Kardashian does what she does with style !

Recently she hosted a lavish party for her daughter North West on her first birthday. The theme was 'kidchella' with a huge Ferris wheel and face painting activities. The party was held in Kim‘s sister Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick‘s huge backyard.

The theme was modeled after California’s annual Coachella music festival that had a stage where friends and family members could lip sync to hit songs and show off their dancing skills!

Shona Barua, took her collection to the next level by drawing her inspiration from the intergalactic theme. She used the influence and perception of extra-terrestrial life to embellish her fabric and the aim was not only to distinguish by also to merge the remarkable influences and create a new style.

The end result was nothing less than extraordinary, it created a fusion of fabrics which were both in the ready to wear genre as well as in couture class. Her collection presented all varieties of options like ready- to- wear dresses, gowns and shorts which were in colors pink, purple, green, grey, black and blue. Heavily embellished and made to look the ‘look’ with surface-ornamentation, the collection was much appreciated by the sitting jury and the audience alike.

WLCI Fashion School wishes Shona Barua all the best for her future ventures ahead of her.
